Cool Ways to Use Concrete Outdoors

When it comes to outdoor spaces, there are hundreds of things you can do with concrete. Concrete cladding panels are by far not the only way to use the material. Concrete is also highly weather-resistant and easy to maintain, come rain or shine. So, how can you incorporate it into your backyard?

Outdoor Kitchens

Concrete has already proven to be a winning kitchen material indoors—why not try it in your BBQ area too? It’s sturdy and strong, providing an even, non-slip surface for food prep. Another great thing about concrete is that you can customise it to suit your space.

You can even cast a concrete BBQ table at the same height as your grill to create a convenient prep space. It’s heat-resistant, so you can build close to the flames. Add shelving and cabinet doors to the design for a fully-equipped outdoor kitchen ready for the summer!

Take a look at this sleek concrete BBQ table we cast for a client. When designing the shape, we left space for the grill to make sure they fit together seamlessly.

Fire Pits and BBQs

We’ve already touched on the incredible heat resistance and resilience concrete offers, so using it for fire pits and in-ground BBQs makes sense. We can mould concrete into many shapes depending on what you like and the dimensions of your patio. You might prefer a classic circular fire pit design or a contemporary rectangle that matches your exterior wall cladding.

Here’s a low concrete BBQ pit we built last year. Notice how seamlessly it integrates with the flooring? With this in-ground BBQ, everyone – including the grill master – can enjoy cozy fireside conversation before the meal. There’s plenty of space next to the grill for food prep, too!

Range Hoods Outdoors

If you want to grill all year round, you might prefer a covered grilling area with a roof. What happens to the smoke, you ask? The range hood fan collects it, as in a regular kitchen.

The unfortunate thing about classic range hoods is that they might not suit your outdoor aesthetic. That’s why many entertainers like to build a custom concrete rangehood surround like the one pictured here.

This smooth concrete hood surround blends into the wall and complements the wooden ceiling. It keeps the space clean and well-ventilated while adding to its rustic Scandi style.
