Modern design explores different materials and how they work together to create new and inspiring aesthetics. One of the most prominent up-and-coming finishes is precast concrete wall panels. Many Calgary homes display this sophisticated cement-based material alongside wood, natural stone, and brick.
What Is Precast Concrete Wall Cladding, and How Is It Installed?
Our precast concrete wall panels are made from cement, water, polymer and fine aggregates. They come in many shapes and sizes, typically rectangular or square, are approximately 3 inches thick and weigh around 7 pounds per square foot. They are not load-bearing elements, so you can easily install them on existing structures.
First, we attach strips of pressure-treated plywood to your exterior walls using a technique called wall strapping. These strips run horizontally and are about 3 inches wide and ⅜ inch thick. We space the straps about 18 inches apart to provide ample support for your new wall panels.
Once the strapping is in place, it’s time to attach the cladding. We use a combination of PL Premium® construction adhesive, masonry clips, and silicone sealant to secure them to the wood. We install the panels one by one, taking care to space them evenly.
Once everything’s in place, we’ll seal the joints with silicone to keep moisture out. You can choose a translucent silicone or colour-match it to cladding for a seamless look.
Why Choose Precast Concrete Panels Over Other Cladding Materials?
Striking Design
Concrete panels are the ultimate expression of style when used as exterior wall cladding. They refresh old houses with a dash of modern design, bringing them into the 21st century and catapulting a home’s curb appeal. They can make any house look architecturally inspired, even if you only use them for part of the façade.
For example, you might use soft beige tones to highlight your garden’s lush greenery or build a moody charcoal feature wall that complements the wooden paneling. With precast concrete wall panels, the design possibilities are endless.
Strength and Durability
Concrete is long-lasting and doesn’t require much upkeep. It’s the best exterior wall cladding material for areas that experience high rainfall because it doesn’t rot, rust, or mould. Apart from a good cleaning every few years, there isn’t much maintenance for concrete wall panels. Their colour remains inside the material itself, so it never fades or needs repainting.
Ease of Installation
Concrete wall panels are generally small and lightweight, so you can transport them easily and install them in high places. They’re modular, meaning they fit together in patterns, which makes them very quick and easy to install. If you love the look of concrete but don’t want to build a heavy, highly engineered structure, precast concrete cladding is the way to go.
